Slow down on Ice and snow
Key Tips for Safe Winter Driving:
- Preparation: Clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof. Ensure your tires have sufficient tread (3mm recommended).
- Driving Style:
- Slow Down: Stopping distances can be 10 times longer.
- Gentle Inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly; avoid sudden, sharp movements.
- Higher Gears: Use a higher gear to prevent wheels from spinning, especially when moving off (consider using second gear).
- Distance: Keep a much larger gap between you and the car in front.
- Handling Hazards:
- Skidding: If you skid, gently ease off the accelerator and steer into the skid. Do not slam on the brakes.
- Black Ice: Be aware of invisible, slippery patches, often formed when temperatures are below freezing.
- Stuck: If stuck, do not spin your wheels. Clear snow, use sand/cat litter for traction, or rock the car gently.
- Equipment:
- Lights: Use headlights in heavy snow.
- Modes: Use “Grass, Gravel, and Snow” mode if your car has it
