Key Tips for Safe Driving
- Avoid Distractions: Turn off your phone or keep it out of reach. Avoid eating or adjusting in-car entertainment while moving.
- Maintain Safe Distances: Use the “two-second rule” to keep space between you and the car ahead, doubling it in poor conditions.
- Drive Defensively: Constantly scan the road ahead and check mirrors to anticipate risks, rather than just reacting to the car directly in front.
- Watch Your Speed: Adhere to speed limits and reduce speed during bad weather or heavy traffic.
- Use Signals & Be Predictable: Signal your intentions early and avoid sudden, erratic movements like sharp braking or sudden lane changes.
- Never Drive Impaired or Tired: Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and take breaks every two hours if on a long journey.
- Maintain Your Vehicle: Keep tires properly inflated, brakes checked, and lights working to ensure the car is safe to operate.
- Junctions: Always come to a complete stop at red lights and stop signs, never rushing through yellow lights.

The new method of teaching is MSPSL ( Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look). We spent time in the 80s explaining what we meant by saying manoeuvre,. Now it is broken down to Position, Speed and Look.
When you are driving use these areas as a check list
What’s happening in my mirrors.
Do I need to signal here to let others know what I am doing.
Is this the right position to do what I need to do,
Do I need to slow down or speed up.
Look again in my mirrors and where I want to go to confirm it is safe to carryout what I want to do.
